Reston was designed, and it shows on the roofs. A lot of these houses are contemporary rather than colonial: shallow pitches, long horizontal fascia, vertical siding, angles that do not repeat anywhere else on the street. A stock holiday layout is built around a steep symmetrical gable, and it simply does not fit a Lake Anne contemporary or a South Lakes split. We measure the planes the house actually has and design to those, which sometimes means running one strong horizontal line rather than chasing a peak that is not there.

Cluster living is the other thing specific to Reston. Many clusters and associations here have their own guidelines about outdoor decoration and how long it can stay up, and we are not going to guess at yours. Tell us what your cluster allows and the design gets drawn inside it. Since everything comes down in January anyway, the timing side generally takes care of itself. Townhouse fronts are narrow, so those designs lean on the entry, the trim line and whatever is planted out front.
